Let’s take a trip back to 1952. Freshly arrived from Greece, my grandparents met while working in a sewing factory, each having migrated in search of a new beginning.
By 1958, they had decided to enter the bread business. They bought Sunny Grain Bakery on Princess Street in Port Melbourne and transformed it into Hellas Bakery — and a family tradition was born.
In 1983, my parents took the reins. At the time, the business had moved to Chapel Street, but in 1989 they relocated again, this time to Bay Street, launching The Melbourne Bakehouse, later known as The Port Bakehouse.
Fast-forward to 2023, and it’s our turn to carry the legacy forward. We’ve moved just two doors down — after 34 years on Bay Street! — and ushered in a new era with a refreshed name: Bakehouse on Bay.
But don’t worry — the heart of our bakery hasn’t changed. Our bread is still made the traditional way by our family baker, with no preservatives or nasties — just simple, honest ingredients.
Like the generations before us, we’re passionate about good, wholesome food.
From fresh-baked bread and handmade pies to sandwiches, desserts, and savouries, we continue to serve our local community — and those who travel for a taste of tradition.
