We take a trip back in time, to 1952 when my grandparents, soon after migrating from Greece with their respective families, met whilst working at a sowing factory.

Six years later, in 1958 they decided to get into the bread business, buying Sunny Grain bakery in Princess Street in Port Melbourne, and turning it into Hellas Bakery.

In 1983 my parents took over the business, at the time in Chapel Street, downsizing and moving it to Bay Street in 1989 and started The Melbourne Bakehouse, subsequently trading as The Port Bakehouse.

It’s now 2023 and it’s time for our generation to run the show.

We decided to move the business exactly two doors down from where it has been for the past 15 years (34 years in Bay Street!!) and slightly updating the name to highlight the new chapter: we are now BAKEHOUSE ON BAY.

Don’t worry, we are staying close to our roots: some things haven’t changed, our bread is still made by our family baker, simply and traditionally with no nasties and preservatives.

We, as the previous generations, take pride in our passion for good simple food: we are still providing bread, freshly made sandwiches, desserts and handmade pies and savouries to our community near and far.
